Our Journey & Recognition: Building Terrart NYC in New York City

Terrart NYC's story spans more than 40 years, two countries, and generations of family knowledge.

Our family's experience with terrariums began in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1984. Decades later, that tradition found a new home in New York City when Charly and Yuvey Uzcategui continued the family's passion and helped build Terrart NYC into the company it is today.

Since establishing Terrart NYC in Brooklyn in 2019, we've grown from creating handcrafted terrariums into offering corporate workshops, preserved moss art, DIY kits, virtual experiences, custom botanical designs, retail products, and nationwide shipping.

Along the way, several organizations and entrepreneurship programs have recognized and supported our journey.

Brooklyn Public Library PowerUP! — First Place

In 2021, Terrart NYC achieved an important early milestone by winning First Place in the Brooklyn Public Library PowerUP! Business Plan Competition.

The program helped us strengthen our business strategy, financial planning, and long-term vision. More importantly, it gave us confidence that a family tradition centered around nature could become a scalable New York City business.

QEDC StartUP! — Sustainability Recognition

That same year, Terrart NYC was recognized through the Queens Economic Development Corporation StartUP! Competition, winning in the Sustainability category.

This recognition was particularly meaningful because sustainability has always been connected to our work—from self-sustaining terrarium ecosystems to environmental education and our focus on helping people reconnect with nature.

Citizens Small Business Community Champion

In 2023, Terrart NYC was selected as a Citizens Small Business Community Champion.

The recognition celebrated not only entrepreneurship but also community impact—something that has become increasingly important to our company as we've expanded our workshops, educational experiences, and community programming throughout New York City.

Ignite Brooklyn Made Award

Brooklyn has played an essential role in the Terrart NYC story, which made our recognition through the Ignite Brooklyn Made Award especially meaningful.

After being selected among 10 finalists from nearly 200 applicants, Terrart NYC was ultimately chosen as an award recipient.

For our team, it was another reminder that local makers, family businesses, and creative entrepreneurs remain an important part of what makes Brooklyn unique.

Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses

Our entrepreneurial journey has also included participation in the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program, an experience focused on helping entrepreneurs develop strategies for sustainable growth.

The program encouraged us to look beyond where Terrart NYC was at that moment and think seriously about where we wanted the company to go next—from expanding our DIY products and virtual workshops to strengthening wholesale partnerships and reaching customers across the United States.

Recognition Is Only Part of the Story

Awards are meaningful, but they don't tell the entire story.

Behind every recognition are thousands of customers, workshop participants, corporate clients, retail partners, mentors, team members, friends, and family who have supported Terrart NYC.

From participating in the Union Square Holiday Market to exhibiting at NY NOW at the Javits Center, developing retail partnerships, and hosting botanical experiences for thousands of participants, each chapter has helped us grow.

Today, we're proud of the awards we've received, but we're even more proud of the community we've built around them.

From Caracas to Brooklyn and What's Next

Our journey began with a family creating terrariums in Venezuela more than four decades ago.

Today, Terrart NYC is an award-winning New York botanical business bringing terrariums, moss art, DIY experiences, and nature-inspired workshops to people in New York City and across the United States.

Every award represents a different chapter in that journey.

And as we continue growing, our mission remains the same:

Bring nature closer to people, one ecosystem at a time.
