Understanding the Layers Inside a Terrarium

Building a terrarium is similar to building a miniature ecosystem from the ground up. Each layer serves a specific purpose, helping manage moisture, support plant health, and maintain balance over time.

Whether you're creating a closed tropical terrarium or building one from a DIY kit, understanding the layers is the key to long-term success.

1. LECA (Drainage Layer)

LECA, or Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate, forms the foundation of the terrarium.

Its purpose is to:

  • Collect excess water
  • Improve drainage
  • Help prevent root rot

2. Activated Charcoal

Placed above the LECA layer, activated charcoal helps keep the ecosystem fresh and balanced.

Benefits include:

  • Filtering impurities
  • Absorbing odors
  • Supporting moisture balance
  • Helping reduce mold-friendly conditions

3. Soil Substrate

The soil layer provides nutrients and support for plant roots.

A quality terrarium substrate should:

  • Retain moisture
  • Support root growth
  • Provide nutrients for tropical plants

This is where most of the ecosystem's biological activity takes place.

4. Plants

Plants are the living centerpiece of the terrarium. Popular choices include fittonias, peperomias, mini ferns, and begonias.

They help:

  • Produce oxygen
  • Release moisture
  • Create a lush tropical environment

5. Moss

Moss acts like a natural sponge within the ecosystem.

It helps:

  • Retain moisture
  • Regulate humidity
  • Protect the soil surface
  • Create a natural forest-floor appearance

6. Decorative Elements

The final layer brings the landscape to life.

Common decorations include:

  • Stones
  • Driftwood
  • Lava rock
  • Figurines
  • Mini houses
  • Crystals

These elements add personality and transform the terrarium into a miniature world.

How the Layers Work Together

A healthy terrarium follows this simple structure:

LECA → Activated Charcoal → Soil → Plants → Moss → Decor

Each layer supports the next, creating a balanced ecosystem that can thrive for years with minimal maintenance.

At Terrart NYC, this layering system is used in our workshops and DIY Terrarium Kits to help participants build healthy, beautiful ecosystems from the ground up.

A thriving terrarium isn't just about the plants you choose—it's about creating the right foundation beneath them.
