How to Personalize Your Terrarium Design

One of the most exciting parts of building a terrarium is making it uniquely your own.

Every terrarium tells a different story depending on the plants, materials, and decorative elements used inside the ecosystem.

A great way to personalize your terrarium is by selecting plants with different colors, textures, and shapes. Tropical plants such as fittonias, mosses, mini ferns, peperomias, and begonias can create lush rainforest-inspired environments, while succulents provide a cleaner and more modern aesthetic.

Decorative materials also help bring personality into the design. Elements such as:

  • Colored sand
  • Lava rocks
  • Driftwood
  • Crystals
  • Stones
  • Preserved moss
  • Bark and natural wood

Many people also enjoy adding miniature figurines and themed décor to create small worlds inside their terrariums. Forest scenes, tiny animals, mushrooms, meditation spaces, fantasy-inspired landscapes, and zen gardens are all popular creative themes.

Layering is another important design element. Combining different substrate colors, moss textures, and elevations can help create a more dynamic and natural-looking ecosystem.

At Terrart NYC, personalization is one of the highlights of our workshops and DIY kits. We encourage participants to explore their creativity while building miniature ecosystems that reflect their own style and imagination.
