How Often Should You Water a Closed Terrarium?

One of the biggest advantages of a closed terrarium is that it requires very little watering. Unlike traditional houseplants, a closed terrarium creates its own miniature water cycle, allowing moisture to continuously recycle within the ecosystem.

In most cases, a healthy closed terrarium only needs watering every 1 to 3 months (Depending of the Vessel), and some well-balanced ecosystems may go even longer without additional water.

Why Closed Terrariums Need So Little Water

A closed terrarium functions much like nature's water cycle:

  1. Water evaporates from the soil and plants.
  2. Moisture condenses on the glass.
  3. Water droplets fall back into the soil.
  4. The cycle repeats continuously.

Because the moisture remains trapped inside the container, very little water escapes the ecosystem.

Signs Your Terrarium Needs Water

Instead of following a strict schedule, it is best to observe your terrarium.

Your terrarium may need water if:

  • No condensation appears on the glass for several weeks
  • The soil looks dry and dusty
  • Moss begins to lose its vibrant green color
  • Tropical plants appear droopy or wilted
  • Leaves begin curling or drying out

When watering is needed, start with a small amount. It is much easier to add water than to remove excess moisture.

Signs of Overwatering

Overwatering is the most common mistake made by terrarium owners.

Watch for:

  • Heavy condensation covering the glass all day
  • Water pooling at the bottom of the container
  • Mold growth
  • Yellowing leaves
  • Mushy stems or roots

If your terrarium becomes too wet, simply open the lid for a few hours or days to allow excess moisture to escape.

How Much Water Should You Add?

For most medium-sized closed terrariums, only a few tablespoons of water are needed at a time.

A light misting or small watering is usually enough to restore balance. Avoid soaking the soil.

Terrart NYC's Recommendation

At Terrart NYC, we recommend observing the ecosystem rather than watering on a fixed schedule. A healthy closed terrarium should have:

  • Light condensation during parts of the day
  • Slightly moist soil
  • Healthy green moss
  • Vibrant tropical plants

Most of our tropical closed terrariums only require watering every few months, making them one of the easiest and most rewarding indoor plant ecosystems to maintain.
