The Role of Springtails and Isopods in a Terrarium Ecosystem

A terrarium is more than just plants inside glass — it is a miniature ecosystem. In bioactive terrariums, tiny organisms like springtails and isopods help maintain balance naturally.

Springtails are small soil-dwelling insects that feed on mold, fungi, and decaying organic material. Because closed terrariums create humid environments, springtails act as a natural cleanup crew that helps keep the ecosystem healthy and balanced.

Isopods, also known as miniature pill bugs, help break down dead leaves and organic matter while returning nutrients back into the soil. They also help aerate the substrate, improving overall ecosystem health.

At Terrart NYC, we sometimes incorporate springtails and isopods into our bioactive terrariums to create more self-sustaining ecosystems inspired by nature.

These tiny organisms play a big role in helping terrariums thrive for years with minimal maintenance.
